The following aims to give readers a sense of what the spiritual path (tariqa) practically entails. Perhaps the best way to do this is to present the actual materials and lessons given to those who elect to travel this path:
- Covenant of the Tariqa: Every tariqa has a formal initation, following the well-known example of the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) when he took the pledge from a group of women about practicing the religion to its fullest. This document is a translation of the words spoken during the initiation, and outlines the commitments to Allah that the traveler is making.
- Travelling: This is a summary for travelers on the path (murids) of the key aims of the tariqa, at its beginning, middle, and end.
- Forty Grand: This is “Lesson 0”, through which students of the path begin their spiritual struggle (mujahadda) by concentrating on controlling their anger and fulfilling their duties of the five-time daily prayer. The aim is to complete forty days without missing a single prayer; a single infraction results in beginning again at Day 1.
- Lesson 1: Here, students focus on becoming aware of and controlling seven all-too-common sins of the tongue and body, such as lying, boasting, slander, tale-bearing, and others. The aim is to complete seven successive days; any infraction results in beginning again at Day 1.
